Care and Safety
Last updated: {{LAST_UPDATED}}
The short version
- Spot clean only: blot spills with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Don't machine wash or tumble dry.
- Keep the rug away from fireplaces, heaters, candles and any open flame.
- Children should play on the rug with an adult nearby.
- The rug isn't for sleeping on. Never put it in a crib, bassinet or play yard.
- Check it regularly for loose threads, worn edges or a backing that has stopped gripping, and stop using it if it's damaged.
About your rug
- Top: soft polyester chenille, printed with your design
- Edges: hemmed
- Back: no-skid polyester backing
- Sizes: 36 × 60 in (3 × 5 ft) or 48 × 72 in (4 × 6 ft)
- Origin: {{COUNTRY_OF_ORIGIN}}
When it arrives
- Unpack it and lay it flat, picture side up, on a clean floor. Creases and curled edges from packing usually relax within a few days. A warm room helps, and you can roll a curled edge gently the other way for a while.
- Like many new chenille rugs, it may shed a few loose fibers at first. A gentle vacuum, or a shake outdoors, takes care of them.
- Give it a look over before it's first used (see Check it regularly below).
Cleaning: spot clean only
- Act quickly. Lift off anything solid, then blot the spill with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. Blot rather than rub: rubbing pushes the spill in and roughens the fabric.
- Mix a little mild liquid soap or gentle detergent into cool water. Try it first on a small spot near an edge.
- Dab the stain with a cloth that's damp, not soaking, with the soapy water, working from the outside of the stain inward.
- Rinse by blotting with a cloth dampened with plain water, then blot as dry as you can.
- Let the rug dry completely, lying flat, away from direct heat and strong sunlight, before anyone plays on it again.
Please don't machine wash, tumble dry, bleach, dry clean or iron the rug, or use a steam cleaner or harsh stain removers. They can damage the fabric, the print and the backing.
Everyday care: vacuum gently using suction only, or an upholstery tool, with the beater bar or brush roll turned off. Or take it outside and give it a shake. Turning the rug around now and then helps it wear evenly.
Where to put it
- Lay it on a clean, dry, flat floor, and make sure the edges and corners lie flat so nobody trips over them.
- The no-skid backing helps the rug stay put, but no backing grips every floor. On smooth floors such as hardwood, tile or laminate, check that it doesn't slide. If it does, use a rug pad or gripper that's suitable for your type of floor.
- Don't put it at the top or bottom of stairs, or anywhere people often walk while carrying things.
- If you use it outside, put it on a dry surface and bring it in afterward. Don't leave it out in rain or strong sun: damp can cause mildew, and sunlight fades colors.
- To store it, make sure it's clean and completely dry, roll it loosely rather than folding it, and keep it somewhere cool and dry.
Safety tips for play
- Stay close. Young children should always play on the rug with an adult nearby.
- Not for sleeping. The rug is for play, not bedding. Don't let babies or children sleep on it, never put it in a crib, bassinet, play yard or anywhere a baby sleeps, and never use it to cover a child. Babies should always sleep on their backs, on a firm, flat surface made for infant sleep, with nothing else in the sleep space.
- Tummy time. If your baby has tummy time on the rug, stay with them and keep watching the whole time.
- Heat and flame. Keep the rug well away from fireplaces, wood stoves, space heaters, candles, cigarettes and any open flame. Like most fabrics, it can catch fire or melt if it gets too hot.
- Not for chewing. Don't let children chew or suck on the rug, or pull at its fibers or threads. Loose threads and fibers could be a choking hazard.
- Toys on the rug. Toy cars and figures aren't included. Follow the age guidance on any toys your child plays with on the rug, because small parts can be a choking hazard.
- Slips and trips. Keep the rug flat and stop it sliding on smooth floors (see Where to put it).
Check it regularly
Look the rug over every few weeks, and after each cleaning:
- Loose threads or fibers: snip them off level with the surface using scissors. Don't pull them, as that can loosen more.
- Edges: check that the hem is secure and isn't fraying or coming apart.
- Backing: check that it still grips and isn't cracking, peeling or wearing through.
- Surface: check for worn patches, tears or holes.
If the rug is damaged (for example, the hem is coming apart, there are holes, or it keeps losing threads), stop using it for play. If this happens within 30 days of delivery, tell us and we'll put it right; see our Refunds policy.
